यत्र वाक्यान्तर-पदानि वाक्यान्तरे प्रविशन्ति तत् सङ्कीर्णम्. यथा, चन्द्रं मुञ्च विशालाक्षि मानं पश्य नभोङ्गने. अत्र नभोऽङ्गणे चन्द्रं पश्य, मानं मुञ्चेति युक्तम्. क्लिष्टत्वम् एक-वाक्य-विषयम् इत्य् अस्माद् भिद्यते.

yatra vākyāntara-padāni vākyāntare praviśanti tat saṅkīrṇam. yathā, candraṃ muñca viśālākṣi mānaṃ paśya nabhoṅgane. atra nabho'ṅgaṇe candraṃ paśya, mānaṃ muñceti yuktam. kliṣṭatvam eka-vākya-viṣayam ity asmād bhidyate.

(16) The fault called saṅkīrṇa (misplaced words) is this: Words that belong to one clause are placed in another. An example is: candraṃ muñca viśālākṣi mānaṃ paśyan nabhoṅgane, “Let go of the moon, O wide-eyed girl. Look at the pique in the courtyard of the sky” (Sāhitya-darpaṇa 7.8). The proper order is: nabho’ṅgaṇe candraṃ paśya, mānaṃ muñca, “Look at the moon in the courtyard of the sky. Let go of your pique.” The difference between kliṣṭa (hard to understand) (7.36) and saṅkīrṇa is that in kliṣṭa the scope is one clause.
