अथ सङ्कीर्णान् आह,

atha saṅkīrṇān āha,

Now he mentions the mixed varieties:

teṣāṃ cānyonya-yojanam[1] ||4.43d||
saṅkareṇa tri-rūpeṇa saṃsṛṣṭyā caika-rūpayā ||4.44ab||

teṣām—of them; ca—and; anyonya-yojanam—the mutual connection; saṅkareṇa—as a saṅkara (a mix of implied meanings); tri-rūpeṇa—which has three forms; saṃsṛṣṭyā ca—and as a saṃsṛṣṭi (a combination of mutually separate implied meanings); eka-rūpayā—which is one form.

In addition, they are mutually combined as a saṅkara (interdependent mix of dhvanis), which has three varieties, and as a saṃsṛṣṭi (mutually independent mix of dhvanis).

teṣām eka-pañcāśataḥ pratyekam eka-pañcāśatā guṇanaṃ ced ekottara-ṣaṭ-śatādhika-dvisahasrī saṅkhyākāḥ bhedāḥ syuḥ. saṃśayāspadatvam anugrāhyānugrāhakatvam eka-vyañjakānupraveśaś ceti tri-vidhaḥ saṅkaraḥ, mitho nirapekṣarūpaika-vidhā saṃsṛṣṭiś ca. tena tayā ca guṇanaṃ cet, veda-khābdhiviyac-candrāḥ, śuddha-bhedaiḥ saha śareṣu-yuga-khendavaḥ.[2]

If each one of those fifty-one is multiplied by fifty-one, the total is 2601 possible combinations. Next, the total is multiplied by four, counting the three varieties of saṅkara(1) saṃśaya āspadatā (being in the scope of a doubt: “Is this dhvani occurring or is that dhvani occurring?”), (2) anugrāhya anugrāhakatā (mutually facilitated), and (3) eka-vyañjaka anupraveśa (two dhvanis in one word)and the one variety of saṃsṛṣṭi, which is a combination of dhvanis that have no inherent correlation. This amounts to 10 404 varieties of saṅkīrṇa-dhvanis (combination of implied meanings). By multiplying this total with the 51 varieties of single dhvanis, the grand total is 10 455 varieties of first-rate poetry.

Commentary:

The terms saṅkara and saṃsṛṣṭi are also used with regard to ornaments proper (10.243) and the three subcategories of the saṅkara of dhvanis also occur in the saṅkara of alaṅkāras (10.259), with minor variations. In Mammaṭa’s system, dhvani-saṅkaras and dhvani-saṃsṛṣṭis are separate from alaṅkāra-saṅkaras and alaṅkārasaṃsṛṣṭis. Ānandavardhana, however, made saṅkaras and saṃsṛṣṭis between dhvani and alaṅkāra (Dhvanyāloka 3.43).

In Kāvya-prakāśa, the words “veda-khābdi-viyac-candrāḥ” (10404) and “śareṣu-yuga-khendavaḥ” (10455) are the last two sūtras of the fourth chapter and complete kārikā 44, whereas the above words “śuddha-bhedaiḥ saha” (with the pure varieties) are the preliminary to Mammaṭa’s aforesaid last sūtra: śareṣu-yuga-khendavaḥ (Kāvya-prakāśa 4.44d).
