ननु शैत्यादि-धर्म-विशिष्टम् एव तीरं लक्षणीयम्, ततः किं व्यञ्जनयेति चेत् तत्राह,

nanu śaityādi-dharma-viśiṣṭam eva tīraṃ lakṣaṇīyam, tataḥ kiṃ vyañjanayeti cet tatrāha,

Someone might think, “In that example, the shore, which is the indicated sense, is already characterized by the attributes of coolness and purity, so what is the need of Suggestiveness?” In that regard he says:

prayojanena sahitaṃ lakṣaṇīyaṃ na yujyate ||2.17cd||

prayojanena sahitam—associated with the purpose (the implied sense, in purposeful Indication); lakṣaṇīyam—the indicated sense; na yujyate—is not proper.

It is wrong to directly link the indicated sense with the purpose.
