अनित्यो विजयो यस्माद् दृश्यते युध्यमानयोः ।
पराजयश्च सङ्ग्रामे तस्माद् युद्धं विवर्जयेत् ॥ १९९ ॥anityo vijayo yasmād dṛśyate yudhyamānayoḥ |
parājayaśca saṅgrāme tasmād yuddhaṃ vivarjayet || 199 ||Since between two combatants victory is found to be uncertain, as also defeat,—therefore he shall avoid fighting—(199).
Medhātithi’s commentary (manubhāṣya):
Because it is not always founed (found?) to be the case that he who gains the victory is necessarily the stronger of the two combatants,—or that he who is defeated by him is necessarily the weaker,—therefore ‘victory is uncertain’.—(199).
