THE present volume contains more text than either of the two preceding ones, and Vol. IV will carry us to the end of Mr Tawney’s first volume.

Dr Barnett continues his proof-reading and has given invaluable advice on a number of points. In the absence of Mr Fenton, who is pursuing his archæological studies in Central America, my old friend, Mr Douglas Marshall, has kindly read through the proofs, making many valuable suggestions.
