The Garga-samhita Verse 1.9.17, English translation, including word-by-word: This text represents a Vaishnava scripture which narrates the life Krishna, It was composed in seventeen cantos by Garga Muni: an ancient sage and priest of the Yadu dynasty having. This is verse 1 of Chapter 9 (Description of Vasudeva’s Wedding) of Canto 1 (goloka-khanda).

ज्ञात्वा स्त्रियं किल बकीं प्रतियोद्धु-कामां
युद्धं कृतं न भवता नृप-नीति-वृत्त्या
सा तु त्वयापि भगिनीव कृता प्रशान्त्यै
साक्षाद् इयं तु भगिनी किम् उ ते विचारात्

jñātvā striyaṃ kila bakīṃ pratiyoddhu-kāmāṃ
yuddhaṃ kṛtaṃ na bhavatā nṛpa-nīti-vṛttyā
sā tu tvayāpi bhaginīva kṛtā praśāntyai
sākṣād iyaṃ tu bhaginī kim u te vicārāt

jñātvāunderstanding; striyam—a woman; kilaindeed; bakīm—Pūtanā; pratiyoddhu-kāmām—desiring to fight; yuddham—fight; kṛtam—done; na—not; bhavatā—by you; nṛpa-nīti-vṛttyā—by the proper conduct of a king; sā—she; tu—certainly; tvayā—by you; api—also; bhaginīa sister; iva—like; kṛtāmade; praśāntyai—to pacify; sākṣātdirectly; iyamshe; tu—certainly; bhaginī—sister; kim u—why?; te—of you; vicārāt—by the thought.

English translation of verse 1.9.17:

Following the royal code of chivalry you would not fight with Pūtanā, a woman who yearned to fight with you, and to pacify her you treated her as if she were your sister. This girl is your real sister. Why do you wish to act in this way?
