The extensive use of mantras can be seen in Sarpavidyā or Agadatantra, which is sourced from the Atharvaveda. Gods are said to have three forms—Devatāmūrti, a symbolic form of the deity, Yantramūrti, a diagrammatic form and Mantramūrti, sonic or sound form. Mantra is thus a sūtra—like utterance, charm, or spell to gain the desired fruit.
Mantrashastra (शिल्पशास्त्र, mantraśāstra) refers to the ancient Indian science of mantras—chants, incantations, spells, magical hymns, etc. Mantra Sastra literature includes many ancient books dealing with the methods reciting mantras, identifying and purifying its defects and the science behind uttering or chanting syllables.
