Plants from this group also prove beneficial in Śoṣa (phthisis), Gulma, Urdhaśvāṣa (asthma) and cough. It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words Vidārigandhā (Hedysarum gangeticum L. => Desmodium gangeticum) and ādi, translating to “first” or “commencement”. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Vidārigandhā, Sahadevā, śatāvari, Bṛhatī, Jīvāka and Kaṇṭakārī. The collection of herbs named Vidārigandhādi is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
