In ancient India, the Vedic literature, particularly Atharvaveda is a repository of traditional medicine including prescriptions for treatment of animal diseases.—Āyurveda not only deals with the Health of Human beings but also Health of Animals and Plants. The medical science that deals with Animals is known as Veterinary science. Before the advent of modem Veterinary science, the ethno-veterinary practices were in vogue since time immemorial. Animals received good medical care in ancient India. Physicians treating human beings were also trained in the care of animals. Indian medical treatises like Caraka Saṃhitā, Suśṛuta Saṃhitā and Hārīta Saṃhitā contain chapters or references about care of diseased as well as healthy animals.
Āyurveda (आयुर्वेद, ayurveda) is a branch of Indian science dealing with medicine, herbalism, taxology, anatomy, surgery, alchemy and related topics. Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
