Vaihāya (वैहाय).—according to all mss, Mahāvastu i.70.16 (parvatasya vaihāya-varasya, verse), kept by Senart, = Sanskrit Vaibhāra (or Vaihāra, once Mahābhārata), name of a mountain outside Rājagṛha. In Pali and AMg. the only form recorded is Vebhāra. See Senart's note ad loc.; he assumes Prakritic y for r, but Geiger 46.3, Pischel 255 make the interchange of y and r seem doubtful. Could this form be influenced by vaihāyasa, etc. (by popular etymology)?

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
