Ūrdhvāgraroma (ऊर्ध्वाग्ररोम) refers to “(the marks consisting of) hair standing up”, according to Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra (chapter 19).—Accordingly, “Furthermore, some say that generosity is the cause and condition (hetupratyaya) for obtaining the thirty-two marks. Why is that? [...] When one gives, one says: “May I be useful”, and the generous disposition (dānacitta) increases; this is why one obtains the marks consisting of having a high instep (utsaṅgacaraṇa) and hair standing up (ūrdhvāgraroma). [...]”.

Urdhvāgraroma (उर्ध्वाग्ररोम) or Urdhvāgraromatā refers to “bristling hair” and represents the tenth of the “thirty-two marks of a great man” (lakṣaṇa) as defined in the Dharma-saṃgraha (section 83). The Dharma-samgraha (Dharmasangraha) is an extensive glossary of Buddhist technical terms in Sanskrit (e.g., urdhvāgra-roma). The work is attributed to Nagarguna who lived around the 2nd century A.D.
