Uparūpaka (उपरूपक) refers to one of the two types of the Dṛśyakāvyas division of Kāvya (“poetry”), according to the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy.—There are two broad divisions of kāvya (poetry) viz., dṛśyakāvya and śravyakāvya. Drama belongs to dṛśyakāvya variety, which is mainly divided into two groups, viz., rūpaka and uparūpaka.

Uparūpaka (उपरूपक).—[upagataṃ rūpakaṃ dṛśyakāvyaṃ sādṛśyena] A drama of an inferior class, of which 18 kinds are enumerated; नाटिका त्रोटकं गोष्ठी सट्टकं नाट्यरासकम् । प्रस्थानोल्लाप्यकाव्यानि प्रेङ्खणं रासकं तथा ॥ संलापकं श्रीगदितं शिल्पकं च विलासिका । दुर्मल्लिका प्रकरणी हल्लीशो भाणिकेति च (nāṭikā troṭakaṃ goṣṭhī saṭṭakaṃ nāṭyarāsakam | prasthānollāpyakāvyāni preṅkhaṇaṃ rāsakaṃ tathā || saṃlāpakaṃ śrīgaditaṃ śilpakaṃ ca vilāsikā | durmallikā prakaraṇī hallīśo bhāṇiketi ca) || S.
