Theravada (major branch of Buddhism)
Source: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesA grove near lake Tapoda (q.v.). In the grove was a monastery where the Buddha seems to have stayed on several occasions. It is said (D.ii.116) that on one such occasion the Buddha gave Ananda the chance of asking him to live for a whole kappa, but Ananda failed to make use of it.
Near the Tapodarama was the Tapodakandara. They were both far from Rajagaha, and monks would come from afar late at night and, in order to test Dabba Mallaputtas powers, ask him to provide lodgings for them (Vin.ii.76; iii.159).
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).

Rājagṛha is the name of a sacred city where the Buddha was dwelling at the beginning of the discourse in the Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra.
Mahayana (महायान, mahāyāna) is a major branch of Buddhism focusing on the path of a Bodhisattva (spiritual aspirants/ enlightened beings). Extant literature is vast and primarely composed in the Sanskrit language. There are many sūtras of which some of the earliest are the various Prajñāpāramitā sūtras.
