Sothis (Sopdet) was a timekeeper, star goddess who represented both prosperity and fertility.
She was portrayed as a human wearing the conical crown of Upper Egypt with a star on top. The star represented Sirius because the annual Nile flooding began during the hottest time of the year when the star Sirius rose at the same time as the Sun.
