General definition (in Jainism)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection IŚrāvakāticāra (श्रावकातिचार) is the name of a work dealing with the Āvaśyaka section of Jain Canonical literature.—The Śrāvakāticāra (in Prakrit) is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—In this Prakrit text [i.e., the Śrāvakāticāra] (language and spelling not standardized) the practitioner, a lay person, repents for the transgressions (aticāra) that have occurred in the past day as shown by the recurring phrase—jo me divasaṃṃi aiyāro kao. They are systematically listed for each of the following areas: knowledge (nāṇa, see above; see list of āśātanās 20 to 33 in the Āvaśyaka-sūtra), right faith (samatta) and then each of the twelve layman’s vows: the five aṇuvratas (ending on 1v10), the three guṇavratas (ending on 2r12), the four śikṣāvratas (ending on 3r11) and finally on fasting unto death (saṃlehaṇā, from 3r11 to 3v1).
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
