One of the daily rites of the Hindu form of worship is to send the god i.e. the processional image to a particular chamber built for this purpose within the temple complex. Śayanotsava is the rite conducted before sending the god to sleep. The śayanamaṇḍapa will be furnished with a cot made for this purpose either in stone or wood. Cushions are also spread over it. The processional image of the deity along with the image of the consort is kept in the chamber and it is locked.
