They are:
- 10 kasina kammatthana,
- 10 asubha kammatthana,
- 10 anussati kammatthana,
- 4 brahmavihara,
- 4 aruppa kammatthana,
- 1 aharepatikulasanna, and
- 1 catudhatuvavatthana.
Not all these 40 kammatthana can give rise to jhana.
