Sāmānyagrahaṇa (सामान्यग्रहण).—Mention of a term in such a general way as would include some varieties or specific forms of it to which the expression put is common; e.g. the word आप् (āp) (fem. affix) for the afixes टाप्, डाप् (ṭāp, ḍāp) and चाप् (cāp); cf. सामान्य ग्रहणार्थो णकारः (sāmānya grahaṇārtho ṇakāraḥ) M.Bh. on P.III. 1.30 cf also च्ल्युत्सर्गः सामान्यग्रहणार्थः (clyutsargaḥ sāmānyagrahaṇārthaḥ) P.
