Nine Teachings:—A technical term in Buddhism corresponding to the Sanskrit pravacana defined in the Dharma-saṃgraha (section 62):

  1. Discourses (sūtra),
  2. Prosimetrum (geya),
  3. Explanation (vyākaraṇa),
  4. verse, exalted utterance (gāthodāna),
  5. Birth-story (jātaka),
  6. Elaboration (vaipulya),
  7. Wonderful thing (adbhutadharma),
  8. Instruction (upadeśa).

The Dharma-samgraha (Dharmasangraha) is an extensive glossary of Buddhist technical terms in Sanskrit (e.g., ‘nine teachings’). The work is attributed to Nagarguna who lived around the 2nd century A.D.
