Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationNandāvrata (नन्दाव्रत) refers to the “sacred Nandā rites” once performed by Satī, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.2.17. Accordingly as Brahmā narrated to Nārada:—“[...] then, in the month of Āśvina (September-October), Satī observed a fast on the eighth day of the bright half and worshipped Śiva with great devotion. When her Nandā rites [viz., Nandāvrata] were concluded on the ninth day (Navamī), while she was engrossed in meditation, Śiva became visible to her”.
Also, as Śiva said to Brahmā:—“[...] O Brahmā, since, in the matter of accepting a wife I showed a little selfishness, I have a feeling of possession in everything connected with self-interest. I have been propitiated by Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa with devotion. Thanks to the sacred Nandā rites [viz., Nandāvrata], I have given her a boon”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
