A city in the Buddhas day, mentioned as lying on the route from Bavaris hermitage to Savatthi (SN. vs. 1011).

According to the Mahagovinda Sutta (D.ii.) it was the capital of Avanti and was founded at the same time as Campa.

It was probably the capital of Southern Avanti, Avanti Dakkhinapatha, the capital of Northern Avanti being Ujjeni.

In the Mahabharata (ii.31, 10) Avanti and Mahismati are spoken of as two different countries.
