Source: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesA city in the Buddhas day, mentioned as lying on the route from Bavaris hermitage to Savatthi (SN. vs. 1011).
According to the Mahagovinda Sutta (D.ii.) it was the capital of Avanti and was founded at the same time as Campa.
It was probably the capital of Southern Avanti, Avanti Dakkhinapatha, the capital of Northern Avanti being Ujjeni.
In the Mahabharata (ii.31, 10) Avanti and Mahismati are spoken of as two different countries.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
