Layasthāna (लयस्थान) (Cf. Layāṅga) means “positioned in the body of Sadāśiva”, according to the Manthānabhairavatantra, a vast sprawling work that belongs to a corpus of Tantric texts concerned with the worship of the goddess Kubjikā.—The term bhogāṅga [the limbs of enjoyment] are counterposed to the layāṅga [the limbs of merger] that denote his limbs insofar as they are in their natural location, in the body of Sadāśiva (layasthāna). They are worshipped first there, then one asks Śiva's permission to ‘extract’ them from his body and to place them around him, each on a petal of an imaginary lotus that is the throne and opens out at the base of the Liṅga. [... ] The aggregate of five or six... constitute the first enclosure (āvaraṇa) of beings that encircle Śiva, like courtesans a king.
