Source: Pali Kanon: Pali Proper NamesAn island in the Damila country, near Nagadipa. Its original name was Ahidipa. Akitti took up his residence there and lived on the leaves and fruits of the kara tree which grew there. On account of this the island came by its new name. J.iv.238.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
