Hiraṇyadāna (हिरण्यदान) refers to the “gift of gold”, as defined in the Śivapurāṇa 1.15. Accordingly, “a charitable gift given to a needy person yields the utmost benefit. If it is given after entreaties it yields only half the benefit. [...] Gift of gold (hiraṇyadāna) increases the power of the gastric fire and is conducive to virility”.
