Hambho (हम्भो).—also hambhoḥ, interj. (Pali hambho, according to [Pali Text Society’s Pali-English Dictionary] ‘expressing surprise or haughtiness’; AMg. id., merely saṃbodhanārthaka according to [Ardha-Māgadhī Dictionary]; Pali ambho, merely in attracting attention, but also in both pejorative and ameliorative implications, Critical Pali Dictionary), expressive of (1) mere emphatic address, vigorously calling attention, hey there! look here! see here! Mūla-Sarvāstivāda-Vinaya ii.49.22; haṃbho…yuktam idaṃ bhavataḥ Divyāvadāna 383.4; haṃbhoḥ Puṣkarasārin svāgatam 621.26 (Divyāvadāna prints haṃ bhoḥ as two words, perhaps rightly); hambho vaṇijaḥ (a question follows) Avadāna-śataka ii.202.2; haṃbho (text as two words) tāta Suvarṇabhāsottamasūtra 190.2 (to the speak- er's grandfather); haṃbho Mahābrahma (mss. °me) Mahāvastu iii.215.1; (2) grief, alas! Mahāvastu iii.204.16 (said by a king on learning of the death of his valued purohita); (3) scornful incredulity: hambho (so read with mss.) na śraddadhāmy ahaṃ Mahāvastu ii.176.5 (verse), wrongly em. by Senart; same verse in Pali Jātaka (Pali) iii.62.18 ambho na kira saddheyyaṃ.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
