Divamaṇḍala (दिवमण्डल) refers to the “stratosphere”, according to the Brahmāṇḍa-purāṇa 2.22 (“Description of the divine luminaries”). Accordingly, as the sages asked Sūta: “How do these luminaries revolve in the stratosphere [i.e., divamaṇḍala] without any clash or confusion or without any structural formation? Does any one make them revolve or do they revolve of their own accord? O excellent one, we wish to understand this. Narrate this unto us”.
