Source: Ancient Buddhist Texts: Geography of Early BuddhismCoḷaraṭṭha (चोऌअरट्ठ) is the name of a locality situated in Dakkhiṇāpatha (Deccan) or “southern district” of ancient India, as recorded in the Pāli Buddhist texts (detailing the geography of ancient India as it was known in to Early Buddhism).—The Coḷaraṭṭha is in Southern India. We are told in the Mahāvaṃsa that the Damiḷas who once invaded Laṅkā came from the Coḷa country in Southern India. In the same chronicle we read of Damiḷa named Elara who ruled over Ceylon and was noted for his piety and justice. The Damiḷas were, however, driven out of Laṅkā by Duṭṭhagāminī, the greatest king that ever ruled over the island.
