Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationBhayākula (भयाकुल) refers to “shaking with fear”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.2.35. Accordingly, as Viṣṇu said to Dakṣa:—“[...] on hearing these words of Viṣṇu, Dakṣa began to ponder. He sat quietly on the ground with his face turned pale. [...] The whole earth containing the seven continents shook with fear (bhayākula). All the oceans, forests and mountains were excessively agitated”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
