Bhaktilābha (भक्तिलाभ) or “Bhaktilābha-upādhyāya” the author of a commentary on the Laghujātakasūtra (classified as literature dealing with astronomy, astrology, divination, medicine), which is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—The Laghujātakasūtra is a classic work by the astronomer Varāhamihīra. But in the chapter-colophons found at the end of chapter 1, 2, 4 and 5 Bhaṭṭotpala is given as the author. [...] This commentary by the Jain monk Bhaktilābha-upādhyāya, disciple of Ratnacandravācaka from the kharataragaccha, is not recorded in Pingree’s Census. The date of composition is expressed through a chronogram equivalent to 1571 (= 1514 CE). It was composed in Bikaner (Rajasthan). The commentator says that he followed the commentary by Maheśvarabhaṭṭa (dated 1114; apparently unpublished. for references to manuscripts of Maheśvara’s commentary see Pingree, Census vol. 4, pp. 437-438).

Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
