Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanyBhaṇṭikā (भण्टिका) is another name (synonym) for Vārtāka, which is the Sanskrit word for Solanum melongena (eggplant), a plant from the Solanaceae family. Vārtāka is classified as a vegetable (śāka) by Caraka in his Carakasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna (chapter 27), a classical Ayurvedic work. The synonym Bhaṇṭikā was identified in the Bhāvaprakāśa, which is a 16th-century medicinal thesaurus authored by Bhāvamiśra.
Āyurveda (आयुर्वेद, ayurveda) is a branch of Indian science dealing with medicine, herbalism, taxology, anatomy, surgery, alchemy and related topics. Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
