Benincasa hispida plants were commonly manipulated in order to delay the fading of its flowers, which was one of the technologies known to ancient Indian agriculturists, which presents a safe technology and methodology regarding organic agriculture, according to treatises (such as the Vrikshayurveda). One such technology was to avert/delay the fading of Barleria cristata flowers. Increasing the life span of desired plants/tree can be achieved by appropriate manures specific to the desired plant/tree. For example, horseflesh is required for Barleria cristata and Indian coral tree for Benincasa hispida.

Benincasa hispida (in Sanskrit: Kūṣmāṃḍa) is a fruit which was commonly manipulated to produce seedless fruits (abīja), according to the Vṛkṣāyurveda by Sūrapāla (1000 CE): an encyclopedic work dealing with the study of trees and the principles of ancient Indian agriculture.—Accordingly, “Benincasa hispida [e.g., Kūṣmāṃḍa], Solanum melongena, Trichosanthes dioica, etc. produced from healthy seeds cultivated with marrow of a female boar and also nourished with the sprinkling of Acorus calamus always produce seedless fruits”.
