Balacakravartin (बलचक्रवर्तिन्).—a kind of inferior cakravartin: stands intermediate between (caturdvīpaka-) cakravartin and (rājan) maṇḍalin (q.v.), Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 6.4; 20.6; 362.8; without mention of maṇḍalin, (ordinary) rājānaḥ…balacakra- vartino 'pi rājānaś cakravartino 'pi Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 367.15; balacakra- varti-rājyam distinguished (as inferior) from cakravarti- rājyam, Divyāvadāna 139.11 = Avadāna-śataka i.5.15; (after nṛpatiḥ, simply,) balacakravarty api ca dvīpapatiḥ Rāṣṭrapālaparipṛcchā 52.15 (verse); here it seems probable that dvīpapati is not the same as balacakr° but rather = the supreme (caturdvīpaka-)cakravartin. Acc. to Childers and [Pali Text Society’s Pali-English Dictionary] (without citation of passages), Pali distinguishes cakkavāla-cakkavatti, who ‘rules over the four great continents’, dīpa-cak°, who rules ‘over only one’, and padesa-cak°, who rules ‘over a portion of one’. The [Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit] terms seem not recorded elsewhere.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
