Source: Google Books: 101 Mystics of IndiaAvvaiyar (7th Century A.D.)—Avvaiyar, “the grandmother of Tamil literature”, as she is affectionately called, was one of the greatest singer saints of ancient India. Many believe that there were more than one Avvaiyar. She could have been born any time during the period 3rd century B.C. to 7th century A.D. But the Avvaiyar who has authored Vināyakar Akaval, was more probably a contemporary of the Saivite saint Sundarar, who probably lived in the 7th or 8th century A.D. Avvaiyar was a great devotee of Lord Gaṇeśa and is considered the pioneer saint who propogated worship of Gaṇeśa in South India.
