Apohana (अपोहन).—

1) Removal &c. = अपाह (apāha) above.

2) Reasoning faculty; मत्तः स्मृतिर्ज्ञानमपोहनं च (mattaḥ smṛtirjñānamapohanaṃ ca) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 15.15 (Mr Telang translates by removal; Lok. Tilak translates as nāśa.) ततो धर्मस्ततो ज्ञानं यावत्स्मृतिरपोहनम् (tato dharmastato jñānaṃ yāvatsmṛtirapohanam) Bhāgavata 11.13.6.

(-nam) Removing, taking off, destroying; e. g. in the Bhagavadgītā (15. 15.) Viṣṇu says: mattaḥ smṛtirjñānamapohanaṃ ca ‘from me comes recollection and knowledge (scil. of virtuous acts) and the removal (i. e. the cessation of recollection and of knowledge of sinful acts)’.
