The Indian masters Śāntipa, Ratnakara [rin chen ’byung gnas], Sāgaramegha [rgya mtsho sprin], and others stated that without having received the bodhisattva precepts in a ceremony from a qualified master, the mindset of wishing to attain enlightenment is bodhicitta of aspiration. Once the bodhisattva precepts are received, the same mindset is bodhicitta of application. Thus, they made the distinction between bodhicitta of aspiration and of application mainly based on the absence or presence of the precepts.
